Philosophy Night

  • Register for Location San Francisco, CA 94115 (map)

Art by Genís Carreras

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC
How would you characterize truth, and how do we get closer to it?

REGISTER BELOW FOR EXACT ADDRESS

Middle Circle's philosophy group creates a place for friends or strangers to dig into the topics that mean the most in our lives. Each gathering is led by a Middle Circle community member and centers around an age-old philosophical question. Exploring these topics triggers our curiosities and helps us connect more deeply to our wider community and world.

Please bring $5-20 (cards work) to help donate to the pizza and drinks that will be provided.

Additional Questions to Ponder for March

  • What do you think plays a bigger role in shaping your views of what is true -- 1) personal experiences or 2) second-hand knowledge/facts, or 3) something else? (Has this changed in your life over time?)
  • On another dimension, what do you think plays a bigger role in shaping your views of what is true -- 1) depth of experience/knowledge/etc or 2) breadth (or diversity) of experience/knowledge/etc? (Has this changed in your life over time?)
  • If some belief could be demonstrated to be false but also demonstrated to have a significant positive impact on the psychology and behavior in people's lives, would you choose to believe it? Do you see an example of this in your life already? Put another way, do you value a belief more for its proximity to truth or for its tendency to yield desirable outcomes? Is truth intrinsically valuable, or is it simply a tool?
